The Eames Creative Process
CHARLES AND RAY EAMES
Ray And Charles Eames were 20th Century Polymaths, then They Teamed Up with Eero Saarinen to Design a World’s Fair Pavilion
Ray and Charles Eames were a husband and wife design team. Charles was an architect and Ray was a painter, but they refused to be placed in a box. They explored the limits of materials such as plywood and created furniture. They pursued amateurism in their work — exploring new frontiers “for the love of it.”
Then they teamed up with Eero Saarinen to design a unique pavilion for the 1964 New York World’s Fair.
Ray and Charles Eames — pushing the limits. Here they use a model to explore the nuance of the IBM Pavilion exhibit. I love the Crescent Board Logo visible on the model.
Together with Eero Saarinen, the Eames created the IBM Pavilion. Rising from a forest of stylized trees, the design is meant to evoke the font ball of the new Selectric Typesetter. It did resemble a Brobdenagian egg to many observers.
Here is a model of the IBM Pavilion.
